Pandemic Era Hybrid In-Person / Online Enrollment Program

In order to accommodate a variety of family needs during the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Open School is offering a hybrid in-person / online program for the 2020-2021 school year. This program is intended to be short-term and is not guaranteed to continue into the following year.

The purpose of this program is to give families access to our school community to the level of their comfort during social distancing and concerns over transmission of COVID-19. It is only for families who are concerned for medical reasons. The Open School is normally a full-time school, and even now a large majority of our families are enrolling full-time, as we are taking precautions to make in-person school as safe as reasonably possible.

The Program

Upon enrollment, families may choose how many days per week their students will attend in-person, from 0-5. Whichever days of the week they are not attending in-person are considered online days.

  • Newly enrolling students must attend at least 2 days per week in-person. Re-enrolling students may go as low as 0.

During online days (as well as during in-person days), students will have access to our online community and will be a part of creating and testing a virtual democratic environment. They may also choose to set up one-on-one online tutorials with a staff member, access the school’s online resources, engage in community conversations, create and explore new spaces, and more. This is a unique opportunity for students to manifest the digital school that works best for them, from the ground up.

Tuition will be reduced for online days. In particular, in-person days will be charged at 100% of the base rate (given by your personalized sliding scale tuition), while online days will be charged at 30% of the base rate.

An example to clarify: Carla Smith is a student at The Open School. Her base tuition, determined by the sliding scale process, is $10,000 per year. We can also think of this tuition as being $2,000 for each of the 5 days of the week. However, Carla’s family opts for a hybrid program of 3 in-person days and 2 online days. For each of the 3 in-person days, Carla is charged $2,000, for a total of $6,000. For each of the 2 online days, she is charged $600 (30%), for a total of $1,200. Her grand total for the 2020-2021 year is $7,200.

  • Families may decide to adjust their schedule during the school year. They may be responsible for additional costs, or may be refunded, depending on the new schedule.
  • Parents opting into the hybrid program will be required to attend a workshop on supporting their child in an online school context.
