Monthly Happenings May 2022

Happy Pride Month. Welcome to the Monthly Happenings!

It was one heck of a month, to say the least. There is so much to fill you in on, so if you are new to our Open School community, Welcome!! If you’ve been with us for a while, Hello again!!

This month we had our first-ever diploma program adventure! What is the diploma program you ask? Well, it is the way our students become graduates. If you’d like to know how that process happens, click here to learn more. Now. For this adventure, the students chose to go to Seattle. And we are awaiting their reflection projects to see how they felt, what they thought, and how their process was getting there and being there.

I can’t wait to interview them!

If you missed the discussion posts that went up this month:

You Can’t Skip Play” Parents often worry that their child is not learning enough from an academic curriculum, but what if a more pertinent question is: What might my child miss out on when their instinct to play is stifled with a set curriculum of study? This article explores the subtle interpersonal learning that children are wired to absorb through play and freedom, and how this unstructured time is actually the necessary building block for children to develop the ability to create organized learning for themselves.

What is Education?” Aaron Browder, one of our Open School staff members, challenges your perception of what it really means to be educated. And he invites you to shift your perspective and challenge your thoughts about what is education and shows you how our school philosophy molds the minds of young people.
