Monthly Happenings March 2022

Welcome to the Monthly Happenings!

This is our March addition. And just like last month, the time flew by. We have so much to tell you, so if you are new to our Open School community, “Welcome!!” If you’ve been with us for a while, “hello again!!”

This month we got ANOTHER new staff member!! We’d like to welcome, and introduce you to, Angela Young.

Angela Young

Angela Young is a mother of four and a Conscious Parenting Guide who uses mindfulness, emotional awareness, and self-inquiry to help families create peaceful homes.  She conducts parenting courses and works with parents on an individual and group basis with the focus of honoring self-direction in children and cultivating parent empowerment. At a young age Angela became immersed in entrepreneurial efforts, and for some time running her own business was her way of achieving satisfying self-growth. But after her children were born she struggled to find a school environment she felt comfortable with and was overcome with interest towards shifting the educational and parenting paradigm. After completing several parenting programs, studying a bookshelf full of connection-based parenting books, and stumbling upon The Open School OC, her greatest source of self-growth is now living and breathing these philosophies in relationship with the children in her life.

We’d also like to introduce you to our Social Media Intern, Charlie. She has been taking all of the wonderful pictures found not only in this post but also all across our social platforms. And she’s been writing the posts you have been falling in love with.

The Under 5 Program is BACK!

After taking a long hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are offering our much-requested Under 5 Program again!

This is an opportunity for parents of preschool-aged children to get an inside look at our unique, student-centered school. Here’s how it works:

  • Spend the morning (10am to 12pm on Tuesdays) on campus with your little one while they are entertained and supervised by one of our enrolled students
  • Chat with a staff member, get to know the community and the model more deeply
  • Snacks and beverages for parents and children are provided

Sessions are 4 weeks in length and cost $75/session

Session 1 – April 5-26
Session 2 – May 3-31 (except May 10)

*Note: this is a local program only and not available virtually at this time.

Past Events

There has been an explosion of science and chemistry experiments this month. It got so big that a few of the kids decide they wanted to take a look at what some of the local Universities provided in the way of science majors. There was a trip to the chemistry lab which was proposed by Cassius. He has been doing all sorts of experiments this month. From blowing up… to dissecting a cow’s eye! His fascination and work has stirred the pot for other students.

Let’s get down to business *to defeat the…*

Sorry, I got off track! Let’s talk about all the students that have opened up businesses at our school. There are Liam and Cassius who are selling snacks, and Drea who has decided she wants space at the snack bar. Also going to open a food-related business is Charlie, who is looking to sell homemade lunch and treats! Coming soon…

And three of our teenage girls are in the midst of creating their own shop, with original art prints. Keep an eye out for that grand opening!
