If you are a regular Open School follower, you already know that we are focused right now on finding a location. This has been a challenge since we started the search in December. At first, it was too far in advance, and we couldn’t secure a location until we had some money in the bank. Then, we had to have some registered families and prove income. And now, the time is too short and every landlord is taking weeks to get back to us.
We have, at this point, pursued no fewer than 25 options. Some haven’t panned out because they were out of our budget, others haven’t worked because of city code issues, and others just haven’t had what we consider to be our basic needs. We have roughly 5-7 options in the works at any one time, and usually one or two of them we would consider to be pretty close to perfect for us. However, we aren’t the only ones who get to decide. There are often boards of people (when renting from a place such as a church) and processes that take weeks and weeks.
I am so looking forward to the day when I can announce our location. It is the number one question I get from families, and it is the number one thing on my mind when I wake up in the morning and go to bed at night.
In fact, we have made a timeline. A date by which we will decide on our location for September. That date is August 1st. I hope it’s much sooner, because a month in advance of opening is very, very tight. And, no matter where The Open School lives, we will have a lot of work to do.
And when I say “we,” I mean you and me. Because this is your journey too.
